Jack's Update #70    February 1, 2006

Election Night This Friday

The annual Election Night, where we will choose the members who will comprise the Parade's Board of Directors, will be this Friday at the Parade Headquarters, The Stempien VFW Post, located at 47th Street and Tripp Avenue in Chicago.  Of the nine available Board positions, seven are uncontested in this election.  The two remaining races are for the positions of Product Coordinator and Northside Coordinator.  We have received statements from the members nominated for one of these positions, that of Product Coordinator, and they are included below.

In addition to the Board positions, there will also be a special survey question about whether absentee ballots should be utilized in future Board elections.

The meeting will begin at 8 pm. All members are encouraged to attend.

A Message from the Parade Product Coordinator Tom Froehlich

Hi All, I just wanted everyone to know that I've decided to withdraw my nomination as Product Coordinator. Some recent family related issues need my immediate attention and will not allow me to fully devote the time needed to continue as Product Coordinator. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me on the Product crew and those who have supported me at election time. I'd like to ask everyone who has supported me to please show the same support to Jamie "Lumpy" Potempa who has been my assistant and is now on the ballot running for my former position. He is familiar with what it takes to get the job done and is ready to step up. I'll still be around helping out when I can and again thanks to all for your help and support.   Tom Froehlich

A Message from Product Coordinator Nominee Tomada Conley

My name is Tomada, I'm fifty years old, I'm married to Barry (Big Red), I have 2 children, my daughter is 29 years old and my son is 23 years old & our family dog is Rider and he's 8 years old.  We live in Justice, not far from the Parade warehouse.  I have been employed as the Office Manager at Ketler (a local steel erector) for 8 years.  We were the owners of a tavern called Corner Joynt for the last 3 years, we just sold the business in April 2005. Prior to the tavern I owned and managed Mama Luigi's Restaurant in Bridgeview for 8 years or maybe longer.  I've been selling TFT Products for the past 2 years as a member.

In the past Barry and I have help with benefits and fund raisers for a lot of different organizations/individuals and I want to add that the results were good. A few examples

  1. In a 2 month period I sold over $4000.00 in product (Tee Shirts).

  2. In one weekend I sold $1000.00 of raffle tickets.

  3. Last year for TFT I sold over $4800.00 in product in 3 weeks.

  4. This year without owning a tavern I sold over $4500.00 in product for TFT in about 2 months.   I could have sold more but Tommy requested that the product be back at the warehouse by the Friday after Thanksgiving. (To get product inventoried and packed for the day of the run)

These are just a few of my accomplishments in the past few years.

Now I'd like to tell you why I think that I am the best person for this position, and some of the changes I would like to make, if the members and the Board Members agree that they would be for the betterment of the organization.

Reasons I believe that I am qualified for this position.

  1. I have been in management all of my life so my communication skills are good and being in management has thought me that you have to depend on others to help you, so my delegating skill have been perfected.

  2. I have worked with inventory all of my working years and I feel that those skills have been perfected as well.

  3. My organizational skills are awesome.

  4. When I do something I do it with class and I complete what I start.

  5. The members that are currently on board selling product and I will work well together for the right reasons, THE KIDS, The Organization and because it can be a lot of fun.  It's the feeling that you get in your heart when you accomplish what you set out to do.  GET ER DONE!!!!

  6. I have truly enjoyed selling product in the past and as I said before I have done well.

Changes I would like to introduce to the members and the Board of Directors.

  1.  We should keep a running inventory of all products.

  2.  The warehouse should have daytime hours and more night time hours.

  3.  Market the product at all motorcycle dealers not just the Harley dealers.

  4.  Have TFT Product Parties.

  5.  My ideas for reducing the amount of inventory that we currently have on hand.

  • Silent auction for the product that is collectible.

  • For every 2005 product that you purchase you receive a ticket that would enter you into a drawing to win some of the old collectible product.

  • Keep selling at the mall and at the dealers as they are currently doing.

  • Send out e-mails on a regular basis notifying the members of product we still have on hand.

Well that's just a few of my ideas, so I hope with this information about me you know that I'm the one that will Get 'Er Done.

A Message from Product Coordinator Nominee Jamie "Lumpy" Potempa

Hi all you TFT members.  For all of you that don’t know me, my name is Jamie "lumpy" Potempa.  I have been working on the Product Committee for 5 years, and for the last few I have been Tom’s right hand man dealing with all your product needs. What people don’t know is all the behind the scenes stuff.  I don’t know if everyone, including my opponent, knows the countless, thankless hours that go into this job. I have put alot on hold because of the love I have for the purpose of this organization, we are all here for the same thing and it all comes down to one thing making sure that no kid goes without at Christmas.

Well enough about that here’s a little about me. I am 30 years old, father of 2 boys by choice, not by birth. I am a local 597 union pipe fitter, this will be my last of 3 years as Cubmaster of cub scout pack 358 from St.Christophers in Midlothian, I am a active member of the Independent Party of Midlothian, I am on the Village of Midlothian Safety Committee, and I am also involved in something with the Calumet Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America, me being an Eagle Scout myself, it has taught me to give back to the world what I got out of it, great leadership skills.  I know that I can do the best job necessary to make this organization that we all care so much about shine. I know I have the support of my loved ones, so all I hope for is your support when it comes down to it, let's vote for the experienced people to get the job done.

Thanks and ride safe and hard.   Jamie "LUMPY" Potempa TFT#750

Thanks from Charmaine Purchase

I just wanted to drop you all a line and say a very big thanks for helping John get us moved in to our new home with everything happening around Christmas time.  All of you managed to help spare some time to help a club member in need.  Well, we are about settled and since the move I have been in the hospital again. So it has been a trying end of 2005 and a bit of a rush for 2006.  Let's hope that this year will settle down a bit as far as me being in and out of hospitals.  Like I said, thanks for coming out and helping him get moved in, I really appreciated it greatly. Now once I get put back together I might be able to help once again?  For all those who didn't know in May, John and I dropped the bike and that is why I haven't been around too much, I was house bound most of the summer.  Don't worry, the bike didn't get hurt, just my $80,000.00 knee.  Could have got a new bike for that, gold plated too!!!  Well take care all and hope to be riding safe soon same to all of you.

Obtaining Toys

Many families ask about how to obtain toys for their children.  The thing to remember about obtaining toys is that the Marines do not give toys directly to children or families.  They are not equipped to do that.  The Marines and The Chicago TFT Parade Organization give the toys to neighborhood groups such as local churches, schools, hospitals, the DCFS, Catholic Charities, The Community Chest and other similar organizations.  Those looking for toys must contact one of these groups to obtain toys.
