Jack's Update #63    October 19, 2005

Greetings from The Toys for Tots Parade Organization

The 28th Annual Chicagoland Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade will be on Sunday, December 4, 2005.

The Parade starts at The Dan Ryan Woods forest preserve in Chicago, at 83rd Street and Western Avenue, where thousands of motorcyclists will begin to assemble at dawn, awaiting The Parade's start at 9:30am.  The riders will travel north on Western Avenue to the USMCR Center on Foster Avenue, where the they will bring their toy donations to the Marine Center.

As always, there is no registration or fee, but all riders are expected to bring at least one new toy to donate to the USMCR Toys for Tots Program.

The Parade will be divided into four or five large groups of motorcyclists, to allow traffic and pedestrians to cross Western Avenue.  New for this year, there will be an express, ride-thru toy drop-off area south of The Dan Ryan Woods, for those riders who wish to drop off their toy donations and leave, just follow the signs.

Safety concerns dictate that only street legal motorcycles will be allowed in The Parade, meaning no ATVs, Quads, or mini-bikes.

Riders are reminded that The Parade usually takes 4 to 5 hours, or more, to complete, and safe riding is mandatory.  There will also be a ride-thru toy drop-off area at the Marine Center, for riders who wish to leave and not park their bikes at the conclusion of The Parade.

There will be a special meeting for all Road Blockers, all Stationary Road Blockers, and all new members, TOMORROW, Thursday, October 20 starting at 7:00pm at the Stempien VFW, and the TFT Parade Warehouse will be open for TFT Parade merchandise sales this Friday, October 21, from 7-10pm.

Parade Volunteers Deliver Clothes and Toys to Katrina Victims

Chicago TFT Parade members delivered toys and TFT Parade apparel to help some of those folks affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Nearly 2400 people affected by the hurricane are presently being housed at the Maryville Academy in DesPlaines.

Last month, TFT Parade staff members loaded up their vehicles and brought approximately $5000 worth of TFT Parade T-shirts and sweatshirts and several boxes of toys and games to help those displaced by the storm.

TFT Parade Collects Supplies for Victims of Katrina

The TFT Parade Organization will be helping the Hurricane Katrina victims in another way by collecting all sorts of items that are needed.  Many items are needed, such as cleaning products (bleach, brooms, buckets, mops, gloves, towels, rakes, bags, brushes), personal grooming items (soap, shampoo, deodorant, aspirin, gauze, band-aids), clothes, and food items (soup, stews, rice, coffee, sugar, juice, beans, peanut butter and jelly).   We will be cooperating with the relief group "Fill Their Truck" and new TFT Parade Member Dave Kieffer.

For more information, and to see a list of what other supplies are needed, visit their web site at http://www.filltheirtruck.org/index.html .

The following note about the Fill Their Trucks Organization was received from Dave Kieffer.

"I have ridden in the last 4 TFT runs and visit your web-site often.

I am affiliated with an organization called "Fill Their Trucks" that is providing direct support for hurricane Katrina evacuees. Our organization started as a grass-roots operation.  However, once WGN radio found out what the organization was doing, they have provided a lot of support.  We deliver donated supplies directly to a couple of communities who are housing hurricane evacuees in their communities (homes, churches, schools, etc.).  We have made a long term commitment to a couple of communities and have sent several semi trailer loads down to their community,  facilitated by the local sheriff.

These folks need help with very simple supplies that can very easily be carried on our bikes.  We know exactly what these folks need, so that the riders are assured that the gift they bring to the ride will be in the hands of an evacuee, who needs exactly that item, in a few days following the ride.

Our organization already has its own web site -  www.FillTheirTruck.org    If you are interested in helping me, please visit the web-site for details.

We have a wonderful company - The Custom Company - who has provided the semi trucks for the trips to Louisiana and Mississippi.  We are worried about getting continuing donations, because these folks will need support for several months and we are afraid the novelty will wear off soon.   We frankly are looking for new and wonderful ways to allow people to donate directly to a fellow American in need.  We do not want cash.
                Dave Kieffer"

Please bring your donations to any of the TFT Parade meeting, and remember that these supplies will be needed for many months to come.

Monetary Gift Night

The Chicago TFT Motorcycle Parade Organization has been privileged to be able to help many groups and families with financial contributions for the last six years.  At the last Financial Gift Night, dozens of representatives from food pantries, boy scout troops, children's homes, and many other groups and families came to our meeting to accept $1000 checks from The Parade Organization.

Our guests were given an opportunity to speak about their work, and were very grateful to receive these donations.  We heard about many

We were also grateful to receive a donation in the memory of Garrett Wilking, who was killed in a motorcycle accident last September.  Garrett's parents were in attendance and presented a check to the TFT Parade Organization in the name of their late son.

Parade Supplies Needed

As we prepare for the 2005 TFT Parade, the staff has been searching for some very important and necessary items, an array of electronic signs, and a load of porta-potties, and a cache of cardboard cartons to hold the donated toys.

The electronic signs, a new requirement of the city of Chicago, will be positioned along Western Avenue, to inform both pedestrians and drivers of the time and date of The Parade.  Approximately 20-25 signs are needed.

Porta-potties are also needed, about 40 to 50 units.

Finally, we need cardboard boxes to hold toy donations brought to local schools, churches, and businesses.  We would prefer the size of the cartons to be around 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet.

Any help with leads or referrals will be very appreciated.  Please email or call President Kuczera at 773-581-5658, or write to info@ChicagolandTFT.org .

" Thanks to all for the beautiful flowers and phone calls after my recent surgery. I am doing fine but still have to take it easy for the next couple of weeks. I hope to be at the next meeting and quite possibly at the warehouse this Friday if I can get a ride. Thanks again, Lin aka: Pin Lady."

Linda does a great job, and we all hope she is feeling better.

TFT Parade Paper Ornaments

The Parade Organization will continue an exciting, new program this year where many local businesses will be selling and displaying red and green TFT Parade Paper Christmas Ornaments.

You may purchase an ornament with a donation of at least one dollar, but larger amounts will gladly be accepted.  When you buy a paper ornament, you may write your name on the ornament and the amount of your donation.  The business owner will then display your ornament in his establishment.  This proved to be a very successful last year, and is getting off to a great start in 2005.

Contact Andy Strzemp to obtain TFT Parade ornaments.  Look for the TFT Parade paper ornaments at businesses in and around Chicago.

Any businesses that may be interested in selling the TFT Parade Ornament should contact The Parade Organization for program details.
