Chicago Changes Parade Bike Ban

We have received some emails and calls regarding banning motorcycles from all Chicago parades.  The following story was sent to us from the website of the AMA (the bikers, not the doctors), the American Motorcyclist Association (http://www.ama-cycle.org/) on June 3, 2005.

The city of Chicago has significantly changed its recently announced ban on motorcycles in parades in response to AMA inquiries on the issue.

The issue came to light after the office of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley sent a letter to various parade organizers, stating in part: "effective immediately, the City Parade Regulations have been amended to include a ban on machinery potentially dangerous to spectators and staff working parades." That machinery included "motorcycles, (pocket) mini motorcycles, mini motor bikes, motor scooters and three- and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles."  The ban outraged AMA members set to take part in Chicago parades this summer. They contacted the AMA, which, in turn, contacted Chicago city officials.

At first, officials refused to directly answer AMA questions related to the bike ban. However, a day later, Cindy Gatziolis, spokeswoman for the mayor's Office of Special Events, called to say the city had modified the ban. Gatziolis said the initial ban was a response to a motorcyclist in a parade who began a stunt and almost careened into a spectator. City officials felt that rather than waiting for someone to get hurt, they should address the safety issue, she said. "This is a pedestrian environment, and this is a safety issue," she said.

However, she said, a new letter will now be going out to parade organizers, which modifies that regulation to allow motorcycles in parades. Under the new regulations Gatziolis outlined Friday, each parade will be allowed up to two groups of no more than 50 motorcycles each.

The Chicagoland Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade set for December 4, a popular fund-raiser that annually draws tens of thousands of riders, will not be affected by the rules, Gatziolis said. Technically, the Toys For Tots run is a "motorcade," not a "parade," she said.

"When we first heard of these rules, we couldn't believe the city would make such a sweeping and discriminatory move,'' said AMA Director of State Affairs Sean Maher. "We're heartened to see them back away from the idea of a total ban on motorcycles so quickly. We'll continue to monitor the situation as it evolves.

The Destiny Through Character Foundation

"Destiny Through Character" is the name of the foundation formed to carry on the dreams and philosophy of the late Frank Griseto.  Frank was the TFT Parade rider who lost his life after he struck the automobile that broke into the 2004 TFT Parade.  The DTC Foundation is the brainchild of Frank's amazing widow, Gloria Griseto, the Chief Executive Officer.  It is a non-profit organization that will fulfill Frank's purpose in life, helping others by providing early intervention for at risk children and families identified by primary and secondary schools in the western suburbs of Chicago.  For more information visit the foundation's website at www.Destiny-Character.org or contact them at P.O.Box 549, Downers Grove, Illinois, 60515.

A Memorial Run for Frank Griseto is scheduled for June 26th at 11am.  Contact jhozzian@comcast.net or 312-860-3076 for more info.

And Frank Griseto Memorial Patches are now available for $5 each with 100% of the proceeds going to the DTC Foundation.  The patches will be available at TFT Parade meetings or you may contact John at 312-860-3076 or jhozzian@comcast.net .

Marine Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Sgt. Brian Smith, 27, lost his life in a motorcycle accident only six weeks after he returned from duty in Iraq.  He was part of the Marine group based at the Marine Center on Foster Avenue.  We received the following letter from Brian's father, Harold Smith.

It is with incredible sadness and regret that I tell you that my son, Sgt. Brian Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Chicago this past Saturday, May 21.  He was with 2/24 Weapons unit and had returned from Iraq with his Marine Corp reserve unit 6 weeks ago.

This has been a very tough weekend.  Saturday morning I got a call from the Illinois State Police.  They told me that Brian had been involved in a motorcycle accident around 8 am in Chicago, on I-90 just north of Benford.  I spoke with the emergency room physician at Illinois Masonic hospital and he told me that Brian most likely died on impact or very shortly thereafter.

This is a very tough time, but all is good.  The Bible promises that everything works for good for those that love God and are called according to His purpose.  I believe very strongly that includes Brian, for I know through considerable conversation and emails with Brian through his service in Iraq that he was absolutely a Christian, and was at peace with who he was and with his relationship with the Creator of the universe.  Brian was at an extremely positive time in his life.  He was discussing marriage with his girlfriend, Tara Spangler, who was obviously the love of his life.

He was very pumped about his upcoming motorcycle trip with his father (me) to visit his sister in Virginia, and then going up the coast to Maine, catching baseball games in Washington, DC, New York, Boston, eating Maine lobster, then over to Buffalo and Niagra Falls, Cleveland, and Sandusky to ride the roller coasters at Cedar Point.  He was excited and anticipating returning to work at CDW on July 1.  He brought such joy to his family, and I believe you can agree, almost everyone with whom he came in contact.

There will be a Marine memorial service in Chicago on most likely on Thursday, May 26, and subsequently his body will be buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, TX, most likely next week.  The Marines have been, as anticipated, incredibly supportive, responsive, and effective in taking care of all the details.

Life goes on.  We will miss very much the future which could have been but, alas, will now be without him; and we anticipate seeing him after this life is over.   God is good.  All the time.

      Harold Smith

Final Thought

Father's Day will be here soon, and as we suggested for Mother's Day, this will be a great time to give Dad an exciting gift of a motorcycle ride.  Spend some quality time with Dad.  And don't forget to include your Father-in-law, also.  Appreciate your parents, if you have them, and never take them for granted.  Happy Father's Day!
