Jack's Update #57    January 4, 2005

Happy New Year!

Remembering 2004

As we look back at the past year, here are some of the significant events that occurred in the Chicago TFT Parade Organization in 2004.

In January, Parade Volunteers visited the Saint Joseph Carondelet Center to discuss motorcycles with the youngsters and deliver Christmas gifts. Elections gave us a new President in Robert Kuczera, a new VP in Tom Yarber, and a new North Side Coordinator, Kevin Curth.

In February, we had a booth at the International Motorcycle Show at the Rosemont Convention Center, and also had a booth and raffled off a Sturgis Vacation Package at the Supercycle Swap Meet at McCormick Place.

In March, we presented the keys to a 2004 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide to Jon Morris of Glen Ellyn at the Harley Raffle at Oak Lawn Harley, and Parade Member Arturo Juarez and his wife had a baby girl named Careena Vanessa.

In April, Parade Members, and other bikers, brought gifts to the children and workers in Utica Illinois after the tornado struck. Avid TFT Parade supporter and Willow Springs Fire Chief Bob Kristie passed away.

In May, "Corbin's Ride On" TV show aired their coverage of the 2003 TFT Parade.  Brian Forbes was killed in a motorcycle accident.

In June, the TFT Parade was a supporting sponsor of The Green Ribbon Rally to fight gastro-intestinal and liver diseases, and President Cooch again served as the Master of Ceremonies, with help from Norm of "Cheers".

In August, Parade Volunteers rode their bikes in the 27th Ward Stay-in-School Parade.  We held our annual Motorcycle Day Ride and Bike Show at the Saint Joseph Carondelet Center.  Former Parade Member Sean Murphy was killed.

In September, the Parade's 27th season started with the 2004 Kick-off Party, and the following week, the Financial Gift Presentation Night where a total of $40,000 was given to 40 charities and families. Parade Members assist at the Tinley Park Garage Sale.

In October, Parade supporter Keith Muky passed away.  Parade Member "Sidecar Jack" Wheeler was killed in a truck accident.  We meet the new CO at Foster Avenue, Sergeant Rita O'Reilly. New paper ornament donation tags are introduced and became very popular.

In November, Madison Joy was born to Parade Members Tommy and Becky. We purchase over $25,000 in additional toys.

In December, the 27th TFT Parade suffered its first fatality, Deputy Frank Griseto. Over 45,000 riders participated, the largest TFT Parade ever.

I would just like to thank your whole organization.  My family has been having a rough year and I wrote a letter asking for assistance for Christmas.  I had got a call last week saying that my children's stuff was ready for pick-up, my husband drove out to Chicago and picked up the gifts.  I was overwhelmed with the stuff that my children received.  I am SO grateful that Toys for Tots was willing to help.  Thank you for making this a good Christmas for our kids!!!!!
Sincerely, Sandy H.

I rode in my first TFT parade the Sunday of the 5th. It was awesome, I couldn't believe the amount of toys brought in by the biker world.
Thanks. Jerry B.

This year was the first year participating in the toys for tots run but not the last. I had a blast.

I was trying to get to a Swedish Covenant Hospital appoinment on sunday afternoon, dec. 5, 2004, when I was stopped at california and foster for almost an hour.  I was forsed to watch grown men demonstrate fits of macho riding their loud and exhaust belching motorcycles.  I missed my appoinment.  This a disgusting way to celebrate giving toys to children.  these men should be embaresed for acting like macho clows.

Great time as always.

Why wasn't the ATVs allowed to run in this years Toys for Tots parade?  There was a bunch of people that where there with ATVs that where turned away. BUT YOU SURE DID TAKE OUR GIFTS THEN TO TELL US WE COULDN'T RIDE OUR ATVs IN YOUR PARADE! Your people told us that because our ATVs are not plated we are not welcome. If that is the reason I spoke to a lot of Chicago Police officers including a Sgt that told me that IT'S FOR THE KIDS  and Chicago Police wouldn't write any tickets or do anything to anyone that was in the parade even if they where driving a ATV, unless they drove it back down Halsted to wherever they parked.  That was not in my case.  I brought a person to drive my Trailblazer with a trailer to the end of the parade and we were to meet him at the end and load them on my trailer and go home peacefully.  But instead I went home angry at the people that have changed the rules. I look at it this away its for the kids that is the reason for this parade. I still gave my gift when others said that if I am not welcome my gift isn't either, that was selfish of them to say that.
Tommy P.

It was our first time IT WAS AWESOME ! we got a warm feeling  seeing all the children along the streets.
THANK YOU ALL.   GARY O.
